NATIONAL NUTRITION AWARENESS WEEK 2020 – “Eat What You Grow”

The Health Policy, Research & Planning, and the Nutrition & Dietetics Departments of the major institutions of the North West Regional Health Authority hosted a series of events for National Nutrition Awareness Week 2020 entitled “Eat What You Grow”.

At the St. James Medical Complex, staff and patients were treated to lectures about simple home gardening techniques as well as produce, grown by staff, were made into delicious recipes that were sampled. At the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, the Dietitians’ Clinic created a series of “How To” videos, with easy step-by-step instructions of doing these simple skills at home:

  1. How to make multigrain spinach bake;
  2. How to blanch vegetables; and
  3. How to freeze herbs.

At the St. Ann’s Hospital, staff and patients were educated with a  series of lectures of on how to eat and stay healthy, as well as home-gardening tips. They were also treated to a sampling of delicious foods made from vegetables grown in a home-garden. Head Office staff were treated to a sampling of delicious homemade recipes from home-garden vegetables. At all these events, seedlings were distributed, patchoi, tomato, lettuce and ochro; so that staff and patients can  practice what they  learnt and create their own healthy and nutritious meals at home for their families.
